Woodstock cancels Canada Day Activities

Woodstock, June 29th, 2021 – Along with many other municipalities across Canada, the Town of Woodstock members of Council and employees are deeply saddened in the wake the announcement on Thursday June 24th of the discovery of 751 unmarked graves near former residential school in Saskatchewan, in addition to the 215 found in Kamloops B.C. at the end of May.

Given the present situation, Council members have decided not to proceed with the planned Canada Day activities on July 1st.  This includes activities in Connell Park, flag raising, cake cutting and kick off to Music in the Park.  Fireworks were not part of the program for this year due to Covid-19 protocols.  Although, Council has cancelled our official municipal program of events, other activities organized by private organizations and/or businesses could still be held.

Because of this tragedy and the impact on our Friends at Woodstock First Nation, and all First Nations communities in Canada, a day of remembrance and reflection is viewed as one of great importance at this point in time.
